Similar shapes
Shapes that have the same shape but different sizes, with corresponding angles equal and corresponding sides in proportion.
Corresponding angles in similar shapes
Corresponding angles in similar shapes are always equal.
Corresponding sides in similar shapes
Corresponding sides in similar shapes are in the same ratio (proportional).
Scale factor (similar shapes)
The ratio of the lengths of corresponding sides in similar shapes.
How to find the scale factor
Divide the length of a side in one shape by the corresponding side in the other shape.
Area scale factor (similar shapes)
The square of the linear scale factor.
Volume scale factor (similar shapes)
The cube of the linear scale factor.
Proving shapes are similar
To prove shapes are similar, show that corresponding angles are equal and corresponding sides are proportional.
Enlargement and similar shapes
An enlargement of a shape produces a similar shape, as all angles remain the same and sides are proportional.
Real-life examples of similar shapes
Maps, models, and photographs often use similar shapes to represent objects at different scales.
