Scatter graph
A graph used to display the relationship between two sets of data by plotting points on a coordinate grid.
Correlation
The relationship between two variables shown on a scatter graph.
Positive correlation
When one variable increases, the other variable also increases. Points on the scatter graph slope upwards.
Negative correlation
When one variable increases, the other variable decreases. Points on the scatter graph slope downwards.
No correlation
When there is no clear relationship between the two variables. Points on the scatter graph are scattered randomly.
Line of best fit
A straight line drawn through the points on a scatter graph to show the general trend of the data.
Interpreting the line of best fit
The line of best fit can be used to make predictions about one variable based on the value of the other variable.
Outlier
A data point that does not fit the general pattern of the data on a scatter graph.
Extrapolation
Using the line of best fit to predict values outside the range of the data. This can be less reliable.
Interpolation
Using the line of best fit to predict values within the range of the data. This is generally more reliable.
