Scale drawing
A drawing that represents an object or area proportionally smaller or larger than its actual size.
Scale factor
The ratio of the dimensions in the scale drawing to the actual dimensions of the object or area.
1:50 scale
A scale where 1 unit on the drawing represents 50 units in real life.
Converting scale to real measurements
Multiply the measurement on the scale drawing by the scale factor to find the real measurement.
Converting real measurements to scale
Divide the real measurement by the scale factor to find the measurement on the scale drawing.
Using a scale on a map
Use the scale (e.g., 1 cm = 1 km) to calculate real distances by multiplying the map measurement by the scale.
Enlargement in scale drawings
When the scale factor is greater than 1, the drawing is an enlargement of the original object.
Reduction in scale drawings
When the scale factor is less than 1, the drawing is a reduction of the original object.
Units in scale drawings
Ensure that the units in the scale and the measurements are consistent (e.g., both in cm or both in m).
Interpreting a scale drawing
Use the given scale to determine real-life dimensions or distances by applying proportional reasoning.
