Rotation
A type of transformation that turns a shape around a fixed point.
Centre of rotation
The fixed point around which a shape is rotated.
Angle of rotation
The degree measure of how far a shape is rotated (e.g., 90°, 180°, 270°).
Direction of rotation
The direction in which a shape is rotated, either clockwise or anticlockwise.
90° clockwise rotation
A rotation of 90° in the direction of a clock's hands.
90° anticlockwise rotation
A rotation of 90° in the opposite direction to a clock's hands.
180° rotation
A rotation that turns a shape upside down, equivalent to half a full turn.
Invariant point
A point that does not move during a rotation (e.g., the centre of rotation).
Describing a rotation
To fully describe a rotation, you need the centre of rotation, the angle of rotation, and the direction of rotation.
Effect of rotation on shape
A rotation preserves the size and shape of the object, making it congruent to the original.
