Rearranging formulae
The process of changing the subject of a formula by isolating a specific variable.
Subject of a formula
The variable that is being solved for or isolated in a formula.
Inverse operations
Operations that undo each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.
Step 1 in rearranging formulae
Identify the variable you want to make the subject.
Step 2 in rearranging formulae
Use inverse operations to isolate the variable step by step.
Rearranging with fractions
Multiply through by the denominator to eliminate the fraction before isolating the variable.
Rearranging with squares
Use the square root to undo a square when isolating the variable.
Rearranging with square roots
Square both sides to undo a square root when isolating the variable.
Rearranging with brackets
Expand the brackets first, if necessary, to simplify the formula before isolating the variable.
Common mistake in rearranging formulae
Forgetting to apply operations to all terms on both sides of the equation.
