Direct proportion
A relationship where as one quantity increases, the other increases at the same rate. Represented as y = kx.
Constant of proportionality (k)
The constant value in a proportional relationship, found by dividing y by x in direct proportion or multiplying x and y in inverse proportion.
Inverse proportion
A relationship where as one quantity increases, the other decreases. Represented as y = k/x.
Graph of direct proportion
A straight line passing through the origin with equation y = kx.
Graph of inverse proportion
A curve that approaches the axes but never touches them, with equation y = k/x.
Finding k in direct proportion
Substitute given values of x and y into y = kx and solve for k.
Finding k in inverse proportion
Substitute given values of x and y into y = k/x and solve for k.
Proportional to the square
When y is proportional to the square of x, the relationship is y = kx².
Proportional to the square root
When y is proportional to the square root of x, the relationship is y = k√x.
Solving proportion problems
Identify the type of proportion, find the constant k, and use the equation to solve for unknown values.
