Direct proportion
A relationship where as one quantity increases, the other increases at the same rate.
Inverse proportion
A relationship where as one quantity increases, the other decreases at the same rate.
Proportionality constant (k)
The constant value in the relationship between two directly proportional quantities, expressed as y = kx.
Equation for direct proportion
y = kx, where k is the constant of proportionality.
Equation for inverse proportion
y = k/x, where k is the constant of proportionality.
Graph of direct proportion
A straight line passing through the origin with a positive gradient.
Graph of inverse proportion
A curve that approaches the axes but never touches them (a hyperbola).
Solving direct proportion problems
Find the constant k by dividing one quantity by the other, then use y = kx to find missing values.
Solving inverse proportion problems
Find the constant k by multiplying the two quantities, then use y = k/x to find missing values.
Proportion in real-life problems
Used to solve problems involving rates, recipes, scaling, and conversions.
