Primary storage
Fast, volatile memory used to store data and instructions currently in use by the CPU.
RAM
Random Access Memory, a volatile type of primary storage used for temporary storage of data and instructions.
ROM
Read-Only Memory, a non-volatile type of primary storage used to store essential start-up instructions.
Volatile memory
Memory that loses its contents when power is turned off, e.g., RAM.
Non-volatile memory
Memory that retains its contents even when power is turned off, e.g., ROM.
Purpose of RAM
Stores data and instructions currently being used by the CPU for quick access.
Purpose of ROM
Stores the instructions required to boot up the computer (start-up instructions).
Virtual memory
A section of secondary storage used as if it were RAM when RAM is full.
Cache
A small, very fast type of memory located close to the CPU, used to store frequently accessed data.
Difference between RAM and ROM
RAM is volatile and used for temporary storage, while ROM is non-volatile and stores permanent start-up instructions.
