The Ridolfi Plot (1571)
A plan to assassinate Elizabeth I and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. Supported by Spain and the Pope. Discovered by Elizabeth's spies; Norfolk executed.
The Throckmorton Plot (1583)
A Catholic plot to overthrow Elizabeth and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. Supported by Spain and France. Throckmorton executed; Mary closely monitored.
The Babington Plot (1586)
A plot to assassinate Elizabeth and place Mary, Queen of Scots on the throne. Babington's letters were intercepted by Walsingham's spies. Mary was executed in 1587.
Motives behind the plots
Catholic opposition to Elizabeth's Protestant rule, desire to restore Catholicism, foreign support from Spain and France, and Mary's claim to the throne.
Outcome of the plots
Strengthened Elizabeth's spy network, increased persecution of Catholics, and led to Mary, Queen of Scots' execution in 1587.
Revolt of the Northern Earls (1569)
A Catholic rebellion led by the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland to overthrow Elizabeth I and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots.
Outcome of the Revolt
The rebellion failed; Elizabeth's forces defeated the rebels. Northumberland was executed, and Westmorland fled to Scotland. Increased persecution of Catholics followed.
