LAN (Local Area Network)
A network that covers a small geographical area, such as a home, school, or office, using internal infrastructure.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
A network that covers a large geographical area, connecting multiple LANs, often using external infrastructure like the Internet.
Example of LAN
A school network connecting computers and printers within the building.
Example of WAN
The Internet, which connects networks across the globe.
Key difference between LAN and WAN
LANs use internal infrastructure, while WANs rely on external infrastructure to connect over large distances.
Factors affecting network performance
Number of devices, bandwidth, latency, and network hardware quality.
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred in a given time, measured in bits per second (bps).
Latency
The delay between sending and receiving data, often caused by distance or network congestion.
Advantages of LAN
High speed, low cost, and easier to manage compared to WANs.
Disadvantages of WAN
Higher cost, slower speeds, and more complex management compared to LANs.
