Iteration
A repetitive process used to find an approximate solution to an equation.
Iterative formula
A formula used to generate successive approximations to the solution of an equation.
Starting value (x₀)
The initial value used in an iterative process to begin the sequence of approximations.
Convergence
When the values generated by an iterative process get closer to a single value (the solution).
Divergence
When the values generated by an iterative process move further away from a single value.
Fixed point iteration
A method of solving equations by rearranging the equation into the form x = g(x) and iterating.
Rearranging equations for iteration
Rewriting an equation into the form x = g(x) to use in an iterative process.
Stopping condition
The point at which an iterative process is stopped, often when successive values are sufficiently close.
Limit of accuracy in iteration
The degree of accuracy to which the solution is found, often determined by the number of decimal places or significant figures.
Checking solutions in iteration
Substituting the final value back into the original equation to verify its accuracy.
