Chromosome
A structure found in the nucleus of a cell, made of DNA, which carries genetic information.
Gene
A short section of DNA that codes for a specific protein and determines a particular characteristic.
Allele
Different forms of the same gene, which can be or recessive.
Dominant allele
An allele that is expressed if present, even if only one copy is inherited.
Recessive allele
An allele that only expressed if two copies are inherited (one from each parent).
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles a particular gene (e.g., AA or aa).
Heterozygous
Having two different alleles for a particular gene (e., Aa).
Genotype
The genetic makeup of an organism, describing the alleles present (e.g., AA, Aa, or).
Phenotype
The physical characteristics or traits of an organism, determined by its genotype and environment.
Mutation
A change in the DNA sequence that lead to variation and sometimes new traits.
Natural selection
The process by which organisms with advantageous survive and reproduce, passing on their genes.
Selective breeding
The process of choosing organisms with desirable traits to breed and produce offspring with those traits.
Genetic engineering
The deliberate modification of an organism's genome using biotechnology to introduce new traits.
Evolution
The gradual change in the inherited characteristics of a population over time through natural selection.
Extinction
The permanent loss of all members of a species, often due to environmental changes or competition.
