Pixel
The smallest unit of a digital image, representing a single point of colour.
Metadata
Data about the image, such as dimensions, colour depth, and resolution, stored alongside the image file.
Colour Depth
The number of bits used to represent the colour of a single pixel in an image.
Resolution
The number of pixels in an image, typically measured as width × height in pixels.
Effect of Colour Depth on File Size
Increasing colour depth increases the number of bits per pixel, resulting in larger file sizes.
Effect of Resolution on File Size
Higher resolution increases the number of pixels, resulting in larger file sizes.
Image File Size Formula
File size = colour depth × image width (px) × image height (px).
Bitmap Image
An image made up of pixels, where each pixel is individually defined.
Impact of Metadata on File Size
Metadata adds extra information to the file but does not significantly affect the overall file size.
Compression in Images
Reduces file size by removing or reducing data, with lossy compression removing some detail and lossless compression preserving all data.
