Fractional Enlargement
A transformation that changes the size of a shape by a fractional scale factor, reducing or enlarging it proportionally.
Scale Factor (Fractional Enlargement)
The ratio by which each side of a shape is multiplied to perform a fractional enlargement. It is less than 1 for reductions.
Centre of Enlargement
The fixed point from which all points of the shape are enlarged or reduced during a fractional enlargement.
Effect of Fractional Scale Factor
A fractional scale factor reduces the size of the shape while maintaining its proportions.
How to Find New Coordinates
Multiply the distance of each point from the centre of enlargement by the fractional scale factor.
Fractional Enlargement on a Grid
To perform a fractional enlargement on a grid, measure the distance from the centre of enlargement to each vertex and multiply by the scale factor.
Properties of Fractionally Enlarged Shapes
The shape remains similar to the original, with corresponding angles equal and sides in the same ratio as the scale factor.
Negative Fractional Scale Factor
A negative fractional scale factor reduces the size of the shape and reflects it through the centre of enlargement.
Fractional Enlargement of Area
The area of the enlarged shape is scaled by the square of the scale factor.
Fractional Enlargement of Volume
For 3D shapes, the volume is scaled by the cube of the scale factor.
