Trigonometric Ratios
The three trigonometric ratios are sine (sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan).
Sine Ratio
sin(θ) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
Cosine Ratio
cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
Tangent Ratio
tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent
SOHCAHTOA
A mnemonic to remember the trigonometric ratios: Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse, Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse, Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent.
Finding Opposite Side (Using Sine)
Rearrange sin(θ) = Opposite / Hypotenuse to Opposite = Hypotenuse × sin(θ).
Finding Adjacent Side (Using Cosine)
Rearrange cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse to Adjacent = Hypotenuse × cos(θ).
Finding Opposite Side (Using Tangent)
Rearrange tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent to Opposite = Adjacent × tan(θ).
Finding Adjacent Side (Using Tangent)
Rearrange tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent to Adjacent = Opposite / tan(θ).
Key Step: Angle in Right-Angled Triangle
To use trigonometry, you need a right-angled triangle and the angle (θ) other than the right angle.
