Enlargement
A type of transformation that changes the size of a shape but not its shape.
Scale factor
The number by which each side of a shape is multiplied during an enlargement.
Centre of enlargement
The fixed point from which distances are measured in an enlargement.
Positive scale factor
An enlargement where the shape is scaled up or down but remains on the same side of the centre of enlargement.
Negative scale factor
An enlargement where the shape is reflected and scaled on the opposite side of the centre of enlargement.
Scale factor greater than 1
The shape becomes larger in size during the enlargement.
Scale factor between 0 and 1
The shape becomes smaller in size during the enlargement.
Invariant point
A point that does not move during a transformation, such as the centre of enlargement in an enlargement.
How to find the centre of enlargement
Draw lines through corresponding points of the original and enlarged shapes. The point where the lines meet is the centre of enlargement.
Properties of enlargement
The shape remains similar to the original, angles stay the same, and side lengths are proportional to the scale factor.
