Density formula
Density = Mass ÷ Volume
Mass formula
Mass = Density × Volume
Volume formula
Volume = Mass ÷ Density
Units of density
Common units of density are grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³) or kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³).
Units of mass
Mass is measured in grams (g), kilograms (kg), or tonnes (t).
Units of volume
Volume is measured in cubic centimetres (cm³), cubic metres (m³), or litres (L).
Relationship between units of density
1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³.
How to calculate density from a word problem
Identify the mass and volume from the problem, then use the formula Density = Mass ÷ Volume.
How to rearrange the density formula for mass
Multiply both sides of the formula by volume: Mass = Density × Volume.
How to rearrange the density formula for volume
Divide both sides of the formula by density: Volume = Mass ÷ Density.
