Cumulative Frequency
The running total of frequencies as you move through a data set.
Cumulative Frequency Table
A table that shows the cumulative frequency for each class interval in a data set.
How to calculate cumulative frequency
Add each frequency to the total of the frequencies before it.
Cumulative Frequency Graph
A graph that plots cumulative frequency against the upper boundary of each class interval.
Purpose of a Cumulative Frequency Graph
To estimate medians, quartiles, and percentiles of a data set.
Median from a Cumulative Frequency Graph
The value corresponding to the middle cumulative frequency (n/2) on the graph.
Lower Quartile (Q1)
The value corresponding to 1/4 of the total cumulative frequency (n/4) on the graph.
Upper Quartile (Q3)
The value corresponding to 3/4 of the total cumulative frequency (3n/4) on the graph.
Interquartile Range (IQR)
The difference between the upper quartile (Q3) and the lower quartile (Q1).
Key feature of a cumulative frequency graph
The graph is always a smooth curve or a series of connected points that never decreases.
