CPU
The central processing unit that executes instructions and processes data.
Purpose of the CPU
To carry out the fetch–execute cycle and process instructions.
Fetch–Execute Cycle
The process the CPU uses to fetch, decode, and execute instructions.
Fetch Stage
The CPU retrieves an instruction from memory using the address in the Program Counter.
Decode Stage
The CPU interprets the instruction to determine what action is required.
Execute Stage
The CPU carries out the instruction, such as performing a calculation or accessing memory.
ALU
The Arithmetic Logic Unit performs arithmetic and logic operations within the CPU.
CU
The Control Unit manages the execution of instructions and controls the flow of data within the CPU.
Cache
A small, fast memory located close to the CPU that stores frequently used data and instructions.
Registers
Very fast storage locations within the CPU used to hold data temporarily during processing.
