Coordinates
A pair of numbers (x, y) that describe the position of a point on a graph or grid.
x-coordinate
The first number in a coordinate pair, which shows the position along the horizontal axis.
y-coordinate
The second number in a coordinate pair, which shows the position along the vertical axis.
Origin
The point (0, 0) where the x-axis and y-axis intersect on a graph.
Quadrants
The four sections of a graph divided by the x-axis and y-axis.
Positive x-axis
The part of the x-axis to the right of the origin.
Negative y-axis
The part of the y-axis below the origin.
Plotting a point
Marking a point on a graph using its coordinates (x, y).
Midpoint formula
The midpoint of two points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) is ((x₁+x₂)/2, (y₁+y₂)/2).
Distance between two points
The distance between (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) is √((x₂-x₁)² + (y₂-y₁)²).
