Cold War
A period of political and military tension between the USA and the USSR from 1945 to 1991, characterised by ideological conflict between capitalism and communism.
Iron Curtain
A term used by Winston Churchill to describe the division between communist Eastern Europe and capitalist Western Europe during the Cold War.
Truman Doctrine
A US policy introduced in 1947 to provide economic and military aid to countries threatened by communism, marking the start of containment.
Marshall Plan
A US programme providing financial aid to rebuild European economies after WWII, aimed at preventing the spread of communism.
Berlin Blockade
A Soviet attempt in 1948–49 to cut off Allied access to West Berlin, countered by the Berlin Airlift.
NATO
