Bearings
A way of describing direction using angles measured clockwise from the north.
Key rule for bearings
Bearings are always measured clockwise from the north and written as three-digit numbers.
North direction bearing
The bearing of north is 000°.
East direction bearing
The bearing of east is 090°.
South direction bearing
The bearing of south is 180°.
West direction bearing
The bearing of west is 270°.
Opposite bearings
To find the opposite bearing, add or subtract 180° (ensure the result is between 000° and 360°).
Using bearings in diagrams
Always draw a north line at the point of measurement and measure the angle clockwise from it.
Three-figure bearings
Bearings must always be written as three digits, e.g., 045° instead of 45°.
Bearings in navigation
Bearings are used in navigation to describe directions between two points.
