Algebraic fraction
A fraction where the numerator, denominator, or both contain algebraic expressions.
Simplifying algebraic fractions
Factorise the numerator and denominator, then cancel any common factors.
Adding algebraic fractions
Find a common denominator, rewrite each fraction with the common denominator, then add the numerators.
Subtracting algebraic fractions
Find a common denominator, rewrite each fraction with the common denominator, then subtract the numerators.
Multiplying algebraic fractions
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify if possible.
Dividing algebraic fractions
Flip the second fraction (reciprocal), then multiply the fractions and simplify if possible.
Solving equations with algebraic fractions
Eliminate the fractions by multiplying through by the lowest common denominator (LCD), then solve the resulting equation.
Factorising quadratics in algebraic fractions
Factorise the quadratic expression in the numerator or denominator to simplify the fraction.
Restrictions on algebraic fractions
The denominator of a fraction cannot be zero. Solve for the values of the variable that make the denominator zero to find restrictions.
Converting mixed algebraic expressions to improper fractions
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place the result over the original denominator.
